Principesa Margareta – White

From the early days of 1990, when Her Royal Highness Margaret of Romania returned among Romanians fresh from the sad communist era and to this day, the Crown Princess has become a symbol of all the values forgotten or ignored in the previous half century – honesty, respect for tradition, passion for excellence, modesty, volunteerism, humanism and charity. Through his daily actions, Her Royal Highness has been a pioneer in all these years in the formation of a responsible elite that would lay the foundation for Romania’s moral rebirth.

In September 2010, the “Domeniul Coroanei” Segarcea officially became supplier of the Royal Household of Romania again, regaining the place for which it was established by His Majesty King Carol I.

“At the request of Her Royal Highness, Princess Margareta, we created two special wines, in limited editions. We tried to include in them both the gratitude for the history that links our destiny to the royal house of Romania and the promise that we will never deviate from the standards of excellence that have dedicated the name of the Segarcea vineyard to this day. The history lesson that the Segarcea vineyard shows the world every day is that a truly well-executed work does not perish with the passage of time, nor with the influence of people. Even in the darkest times of communist nationalization and collectivization, the Segarcea name remained a landmark of quality, as desired by its founder, His Majesty, King Carol I.

In recognition, the present company remains committed to the values born simultaneously with the Crown Estate Act, on June 10 (22), 1884: excellence, tradition, love and respect for the land.”

Tasting notes 

One of the most complex Romanian white wines, with a varied floral scope that shapes and completes the wine’s fruit and glyceral structure. Aromas of white cherries and plums, vanilla, vines, fresh acacia flowers, lime and dried flowers. With an extended olfactory path dominated by freshness. 20% Chardonnay, 20% Pinot Gris, 45% Viognier barrique in acacia and oak barrels, 15% Viognier.

Serving Tip
Recommended temperature 11ºC – 13ºC.

Winemaking
The grapes are harvested by hand and carbonation of the unstemmed grapes takes place. The wine is then aged in French and American oak barrels of first and second courses, for a period of up to one year.

Winery

Bordeaux, Burgundy, Piedmont and “Domeniul Coroanei” Segarcea share the 44º parallel, the unparalleled wine parallel.

The vineyard of “Domeniul Coroanei” covers 277 hectares. Its location in an amphitheater open to the south ensures a record number of hours of sunshine per vegetation cycle (from the first buds in spring to hibernation). The soil consists of a layer of chernozem, under which there is a layer of limestone, then a former seabed, this structure gives the wine the acidity that perfectly complements the character of well-ripened wine fruit.

The 277 hectares of vineyards have been completely replanted, with the exception of some old stumps more than a century old, which allowed a unique variety, “Tămâioasa Roză,” to be saved.

“In all work in the vineyard, we try to stay as close as possible to traditional methods and use the most appropriate solutions, so that we coexist with nature and do not exploit it. From grazing (to prevent excess water after rainfall) to drainage, from a minimum of synthetic substances to more than 30,000 rose nests planted at each end of the row to give us timely warning of impending infections such as downy mildew, powdery mildew or other vine infections, we try to create a harmonious whole and the biodiversity (both flora and fauna) reborn around the vineyard is proof that we have chosen the best path.”
